Sharjah Parking 2026: Zones, Timings, Fees and Fines

Sharjah changed its parking hours on 1 July 2026, and most of what you will find online has not caught up. Paid parking now runs until midnight across the emirate, not 10pm. If you are working from an older guide, or from memory, that is two extra hours every day when a ticket is needed and a fine is possible.

We run a rental fleet in Dubai as an RTA-authorised dealer and agency, and a good number of our cars spend their days in Sharjah - customers who live there, commute there, or drive over at the weekend. When a parking fine lands on one of those cars it comes to us, and then to the customer. So here is what Sharjah charges, when it charges it, and how to pay, checked against the municipality's own pages and UAE news reporting.

The short version

• Paid parking runs 8am to midnight across Sharjah city, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid - extended from 10pm on 1 July 2026.

• Blue-sign zones charge every day of the week, public holidays included. Yellow-sign zones are free on Fridays and official public holidays.

• Rates are AED 2 for one hour, AED 5 for two, AED 8 for three and AED 12 for five.

• Pay by SMS to 5566, through the municipality's parking app, or at a ticket machine.

• Sharjah gives a 10-minute grace period on each new parking session. Dubai does not.

• AED 150 for no valid ticket, AED 100 for overstaying the one you bought.

• Seasonal subscriptions cover two zones or the whole city, from ten days up to a year.

What changed on 1 July 2026

Sharjah extended paid parking hours across the emirate from 8am-10pm to 8am to midnight, effective 1 July 2026. It applies in Sharjah city, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Al Dhaid, and covers roughly 124,000 public parking spaces.

The point of the change was to bring the yellow-sign zones into line with the blue-sign ones, which had already moved to midnight. Hamed Al Qaed, director of public parking at Sharjah City Municipality, put it down to demand - subscription holders were struggling to find a space after 10pm.

Subscription prices did not go up with it. Instead, subscribers gained two more hours of daily exemption, from 14 hours to 16.

The practical consequence is simple. The 10pm figure is still printed all over the internet, including in guides published this year. Park in Sharjah at half past ten without paying and you can be fined for it.

Blue signs, yellow signs and smart lots

Sharjah splits its paid parking by the colour of the signboard, and the difference matters most at the weekend.

Blue-sign zones are the seven-day zones. They charge every day of the week and on public holidays, 8am to midnight. These are the busiest areas - the corniche stretches, the commercial districts, anywhere with constant turnover. The bays are marked with blue and white kerb lines.

Yellow-sign zones run Saturday to Thursday, and parking in them is free on Fridays and on official public holidays. Since 1 July they keep the same 8am to midnight hours as the blue zones on the days they do charge.

There is a third category worth knowing about: smart parking lots, where cameras read your number plate on the way in and again on the way out and the duration is worked out for you. These do not behave like a street bay, and the signage at the entrance tells you how payment is handled there.

The sign beside the bay is the authority on all of this. If you cannot find one, assume the bay is paid.

What Sharjah parking costs

The street tariff is the same across the emirate's paid zones:

• One hour - AED 2

• Two hours - AED 5

• Three hours - AED 8

• Five hours - AED 12

Those are the municipality's published figures, and Khaleej Times lists the same four. Note that the longer blocks are cheaper per hour, so if you know you will be a while, buy the block up front rather than paying twice.

If you pay by SMS, the municipality's own parking page adds a transaction charge of 38 fils per message on top of the parking fee itself.

For anyone in Sharjah regularly, a seasonal subscription is the cheaper route. They run from ten days to twelve months and cover either two zones of your choosing or the whole city. Gulf News reported a one-month, two-zone permit at AED 166 at the time of writing, with discounts for several categories including students, retirees and government employees. Check the current price in the app before you commit.

How to pay for parking in Sharjah

By SMS. Send a message to 5566 with your plate source, then your plate number, then the number of hours. Sharjah unified this format across its cities in March 2025, so the same syntax works in Sharjah city, Khorfakkan, Kalba and Al Dhaid. The municipality's own worked example is the source code, the plate number and the duration - SHJ, then your number, then 2 for two hours. Send the word help to the same number if you get stuck.

By app. Sharjah Municipality launched Mawqef in February 2025 for parking payments, fines and subscriptions, with zone maps and renewal reminders, and it signs in through UAE PASS. More recent reporting on the smart lots refers to payments running through the Sharjah Digital app instead, so check which one the lot you are in expects rather than assuming.

At a machine. The ticket machines still work at the kerb. The ticket goes on the dashboard, face up, where an inspector can read it.

One thing our own customers get caught by, whichever route they use: Sharjah charges the number plate, not the person. If we swap your car on a service day, the plate saved in your phone belongs to a vehicle you are no longer driving - you pay correctly, for the wrong car, and the right car gets the ticket. The 10-minute grace period, and the fines after it

Sharjah gives you ten minutes. The monitoring system takes a first reading of the cars in a zone, returns ten minutes later, and only issues a violation if the bay is still unpaid on the second pass. Sharjah Municipality has confirmed the window applies to every new parking session and resets if you move to a different bay. It is not a way to extend parking you have already paid for, and Dubai has no equivalent, so do not carry the habit across the border.

After that, the published fines are:

• No valid ticket bought or displayed - AED 150

• Overstaying the time on your ticket - AED 100

• Obstructing movement in a parking area - AED 200

• Parking in a People of Determination bay without a permit - AED 1,000

• Reserving a space, or occupying a reserved space, without a licence - AED 1,000

• Stopping on the pavement or at the roadside - AED 500

And one that catches people out constantly: sitting in the car does not exempt you. Sharjah Municipality has stated plainly that waiting inside the vehicle still requires payment.
