How to Pay for Parking in Dubai (2026): A Step-by-Step Guide

Almost every parking fine our customers get is avoidable, and almost none come from parking badly. They come from small setup mistakes: the wrong plate saved in the app, a guessed zone code, a session that ran out during lunch. This is the whole process, start to finish, so you can follow it once and stop thinking about it.

Parking in Dubai is run by Parkin and charged to the driver, through the driver's own account. We cannot pay or manage it for you, so it is worth ten minutes now to set up properly.

The short version

• Install the Parkin app, add a payment method, and add your car's plate before you park anywhere. That is the whole setup.

• Check the zone code on the sign next to the bay every time. Parkin lists zone codes as A, B, C, D and P, shown on the signage and in the app.

• Turn on auto-renew. There is no grace period when a session expires.

• If we swap your car, update the plate in the app the same day - Parkin bills the plate, not you.

• Barrier-free car parks charge you with no barrier and no ticket, but only if the vehicle is validated in the app first.

• Keep the electronic confirmation. Parkin says printed tickets are not required and payment is recorded digitally.

Step one: set the app up, once

Do this before you need it, not in a car park with two minutes to spare. It takes about five minutes.

1. Install Parkin from the App Store or Google Play and create an account.

2. Add a payment method and put some credit on it. A session will not start on an empty balance, and you usually find that out from the fine rather than from the app.

3. Add your vehicle. Enter the plate code and plate number exactly as they appear on the car, and select the right emirate. Do not go from memory - walk out and read the plate, or check the plate details on your rental paperwork.

4. Turn on auto-renew in the settings, and allow notifications so you get the reminder before a session ends.

5. If you will use car parks like City Walk, validate the vehicle for barrier-free parking now. More on that below.

From here, paying takes about fifteen seconds.

Step two: paying for a parking session

1. Park, then look at the sign next to the bay and find the zone code. It is a number followed by a letter, like 123A. Parkin's zone letters are A, B, C, D and P, and the code is on the signage as well as in the app.

2. Open the app, select the car you are actually driving if you have more than one saved, and enter the zone code.

3. Choose how long you need. Pay a little more time than you think - extending is easy, but being late is not forgivable.

4. Confirm, and wait for the confirmation to appear. That electronic record is your ticket - Parkin does not require a printed one.

5. When the reminder arrives near the end, extend from the notification if you are still parked.

Rates vary by zone and time of day, and all parking has carried 5 per cent VAT since 1 June 2026, which is why published prices now end in odd fils. Our Dubai parking guide has the rate table, zone letters and free hours in full.

Paying by SMS, if you prefer

SMS parking works from a UAE mobile number on Etisalat or du, registered with Parkin and with credit on it. Send your message to 7275. There is a 30 fils telecom charge per message on top of the parking fee.

For a Dubai plate, the message is the plate number, then the zone code, then the number of hours, each separated by a space. So a car on plate A00000 parking in zone 444A for two hours sends:

A00000 444A 2

For a plate from another emirate, you put the emirate and plate code first, then the plate number, the zone and the hours. For example:

• Abu Dhabi: AUH13 12345 335A 1

• Sharjah: SHJ2 12345 335A 2

• Ajman: AJM 00000 000A 4

You get a confirmation message back telling you whether it worked - read it, because a failed transaction looks exactly like a successful one until you check. Near the end you get a reminder; reply Y to extend by the same duration, or send a fresh message for a different length.

If you are visiting, note SMS parking needs a UAE number and will not work on a foreign SIM, so the app is your only route.

The other ways to pay

Parkin lists four routes: the app, SMS, WhatsApp and the smart meters. You can message Mahboub on WhatsApp at +971 58 800 9090, which avoids the SMS charge, and the RTA and Dubai Now apps handle parking too. The app is the most reliable, because it can find your zone rather than making you read it off a sign in the dark. Meters are card and digital only now - cash has been phased out.

If we swap your car, update the app that day

This catches our customers more than anything else, and it is worth understanding because it does not feel like a mistake when you make it.

Parkin charges the number plate, not the person. If we exchange your car for a service day, a repair or an upgrade, the plate saved in your app is now a vehicle you are not driving. You can pay the right amount for the right zone for the right length of time and walk away satisfied, while the car you are sitting in has no session against it at all. You get fined having paid.

Parkin's own guidance covers this: keep your registered plate details accurate whenever you change car or plates. So the rule is simple. Any time the car changes, update the plate in the app before you park again, and delete the old vehicle so it cannot be selected by accident.

Barrier-free car parks

Some Dubai car parks now have no barrier and no ticket machine at all. City Walk works this way: cameras read your plate on the way in and on the way out, and the charge comes off your Parkin account automatically. The first hour there is free, then it is AED 5 an hour including VAT.

The catch is that this only works if the vehicle has been validated in the Parkin app first. If it has not, you can drive in, park, shop and drive out without ever seeing a sign, a barrier or a machine telling you that you owed anything. Validate the plate before using one of these car parks, and do it again if your car is swapped. Malls and private multi-storey car parks run their own systems with their own rules, often with the same plate tracking, and are not covered by your Parkin session.

There is no grace period

Assume the clock is exact, because it is. The old ten-minute buffer is long gone, enforcement is automated, and drivers have been fined at the exact minute their session ran out. Parkin's own advice is to enable auto-renew, and that is the practical answer - turn it on and the session extends itself instead of ending while you are still in the restaurant.

If you get a fine anyway

Tell us as soon as you see it. Fines are issued against the vehicle, so they reach us first and then you, and the sooner it is raised the more you can do. You settle it with us, and can then submit an objection to Parkin directly - objections go in electronically, and if yours is accepted the fine is refunded, at which point we refund you. Time is what kills a good objection, so a fine you hear about weeks later is much harder to challenge.

Renting a car in Dubai?
