What car seat does my child need in the UAE?

Set your child's age and height. The answer follows the two thresholds written into UAE law - four years for a child seat, and ten years plus 145 cm for the front passenger seat.

The penalty for a child-restraint or seat-belt violation, issued to the driver rather than the parent. Black points accumulate against the licence and enough of them leads to suspension, which is the expensive part.

What is law, and what is guidance

Three things are written into the federal traffic rules and carry a stated penalty: a child under four must be in a child safety seat, a front-seat passenger must be at least ten years old and at least 145 cm tall, and every occupant must wear a seat belt, rear seats included.

The booster stage in between - after the child seat, before the adult belt fits properly - is police guidance rather than a separately worded offence. Dubai Police put it at roughly five to ten years old; the more recent framing is four and up until the child reaches 145 cm. This tool labels it as guidance, because that is what it is. It still matters: a belt that crosses a small child's throat and stomach instead of their shoulder and hips is the injury the booster exists to prevent.

Height is the honest test rather than age. If the belt cuts across the throat or rides up over the stomach when your child sits normally, they are not ready for it, whatever their birthday says.

In a rental car

We supply and fit a child seat or booster as an add-on, installed before the car reaches you - tell us your child's age and rough height when you book, because that decides which stage of seat we bring. Ask for the current add-on price at the time of booking.

One thing specific to rentals: if we swap your car on a service day or partway through a monthly plan, the seat has to move across and be refitted properly. Mention it when you arrange the swap and our driver will handle it at the handover.

Common questions

Can my 8-year-old sit in the front seat?
No. The front seat needs ten years of age and 145 cm of height, and both have to be met. A tall eight-year-old still travels in the back. It is one of the most common mistakes we see, because parents reasonably assume height alone is enough.
My child is 145 cm but only nine. Can they sit in front?
Not yet. Height is only half the test - the age condition is separate and still applies. They move to the front on their tenth birthday, not when the tape measure says so.
Is a booster legally required in the UAE?
The explicit legal requirement covers children under four, who must be in a child safety seat, and it requires everyone to be belted. The booster stage in between is police guidance rather than a separately worded offence. It is still what makes an adult belt sit safely on a small body, which is why this tool recommends it up to 145 cm.
Who gets the fine - me or the parent?
The driver. AED 400 and four black points land on the licence of whoever is driving, whether or not the children are theirs. Worth knowing before you offer to do the school run.
Can I put a rear-facing seat in the front?
Not in front of an active passenger airbag. An airbag deploys with enough force to injure an infant in a rear-facing seat. If a car has no back seat, the airbag must be switched off first, and many cars cannot switch it off at all.
