Dubai to Hatta by Car: The Route, the Time and the Season

12 October 2026Urban Go8 min read

Hatta sits 90 minutes from Dubai in the Hajar mountains. Which road to take, why no distance appears here, what reopened for season nine, and the rain rule.

The divided mountain highway to Hatta curving through the Hajar mountains

Hatta is the part of Dubai that does not look like Dubai. It sits in the Hajar mountains on the eastern side of the country, about an hour and a half from the city.

We run a rental fleet in Dubai as an RTA-authorised dealer and agency, and Hatta is a trip our cars can make, because it stays inside the UAE from start to finish. Here is what is worth knowing before you go: which road to take, how long it takes, what reopened at the end of September, and the weather rule that matters in the mountains.

The short version

  • The route Dubai Holding publishes as the quickest from Dubai is the Sharjah-Kalba road, the E102, which stays inside the UAE the whole way.

  • Khaleej Times, Dubai Holding and the Visit Hatta site all give the trip as about 90 minutes from Dubai; none publishes a road distance, so there is no kilometre figure on this page.

  • Hatta Resorts reopened on 28 September 2026 for its ninth season, and the Visit Hatta site puts most activities between the start of October and early May.

  • Dubai Police warn visitors to stay out of the valleys and away from flowing water when it rains, and to call 999 with an exact location.

  • Our cars may be driven anywhere in the seven Emirates, Hatta included, but they are not permitted to leave the UAE, so the Oman crossing past the town is out.

The road to Hatta, and the stretch to avoid

Hatta belongs to Dubai but is not joined to it, and there is more than one line you can draw between the two on a map. The one you want is the Sharjah-Kalba road, the E102, which the Visit Hatta site run by Dubai Holding names as the quickest route from Dubai.

The line to be careful with is the direct E44 through Al Madam, because part of it runs through Omani territory. Gulf News reported in 2018 that non-GCC nationals were no longer allowed to use that direct stretch, that drivers who tried were turned back at the checkpoint after Al Madam, and that the detour avoiding Omani territory added about half an hour. That report is now eight years old and we found no current source restating the rule, so treat it as a question for the authorities rather than a settled position.

The practical answer does not depend on it either way, because both the 2018 Gulf News piece and the current Visit Hatta page point at the same road. Follow the signposted route for Hatta. For the other drives out of the city, our guide to Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain covers the northern and inland runs.

How long it takes, and why there is no distance on this page

Three separate sources answer the how-far question with a time rather than a distance. Khaleej Times, reporting the resorts reopening in September 2026, puts Hatta at about 90 minutes from Dubai. Dubai Holding says the same in its own announcement. The Visit Hatta site gives approximately 90 minutes by car from Dubai, and about 90 minutes from Dubai International Airport.

We could not find a road distance in kilometres published by a UAE authority or by a UAE news outlet, so this page gives none. That is deliberate rather than an oversight: the confident numbers we found trace back to commercial travel and rental sites rather than to any authority.

Treat 90 minutes as the clear-road figure. Speed limits change several times along the route and the sign beside the road always beats any list, including ours - the detail is in our UAE speed limits guide.

The season reopened on 28 September

Hatta runs on a season rather than a calendar, and this one is open now. Hatta Resorts reopened on 28 September 2026 for its ninth season, a date confirmed both by Khaleej Times and by Dubai Holding's own announcement on 16 September. The Hatta Wadi Hub, where the activities are, reopens with it.

New this season, per both: Caravan Hatta by Our Habitas, a trailer stay overlooking Hatta Dam with its own dining concept and swimming pool; two restored vintage coaches converted into rooms for two, a 1958 coach of 23.23 square metres and a 1948 coach of 15.4 square metres, each with a private outdoor barbecue station; and private plunge pools on two of the seven Premier Lodges. Hiking and mountain-biking trails are open, and both name Ultra Trail Dubai in November as the season endurance event.

One practical warning. The Visit Hatta site gives different opening hours for the Wadi Hub in different places on its own pages - one says 9am to 7pm daily, another 8am to 7pm for the 1 October to 5 May period. Check the hours for the day you travel rather than trusting any guide, including this one. Visit Hatta also says Wadi Hub activities are booked on site rather than in advance.

Rain, valleys and the Hatta Police warning

In March 2026 Dubai Police, through Hatta Police Station, issued a public alert ahead of unstable weather telling motorists and visitors to stay away from water streams, to avoid the valleys and fast-flowing water, and not to attempt to cross flooded areas. Brigadier Mubarak bin Mubarak Al Ketbi, Director of Hatta Police Station, said patrols deploy as soon as rain begins and the valleys start to flow.

The alert also asked drivers to slow down when the warning signs on the road are activated, which happens once the valleys begin running, and to report any emergency by calling 999 with an accurate location so responders reach the right place. It formed part of a Dubai Police campaign called Rain is a Blessing, Don't Make It a Calamity.

Khaleej Times made the same point in December 2025, reporting from mountain villages where residents said the problem is visitors who drive into a flowing wadi believing they can cross, and that a quiet valley can turn into a torrent within minutes. Residents there wait for the water to drop rather than attempt the journey, and that is the right answer whatever you are driving.

Tolls, fuel, and the bus if you would rather not drive

Salik depends on where in Dubai you start and which roads you take out of the city, so there is no single toll figure for this trip - our Salik guide explains the gates and the rates. On our cars Salik is recharged at cost plus AED 1 per crossing, itemised, and traffic fines are billed to you, itemised. Fuel is same-to-same: the level is recorded at handover and the car comes back at that level. Current pump prices are on our UAE petrol prices page, updated at the start of every month.

The Hatta crossing into Oman lies beyond the town on the same road, and it is worth saying plainly that it is not a door you can use in one of our cars. Our vehicles may be driven anywhere in the seven Emirates but are not permitted to leave the UAE. If Oman is the plan, our guide to driving from Dubai to Oman sets out what it needs.

If you would rather not drive at all, the honest answer is that you do not have to. Gulf News sets out the RTA Hatta Express, route H02, which runs from Dubai Mall to Hatta main bus station for AED 25 a trip, paid by Nol card only, departing roughly every two hours between 7am and 7pm, with a hop-on hop-off service around the Hatta sights from the bus station at AED 2. Check the current timings in the RTA app before relying on them.

FAQ

About 90 minutes. Khaleej Times, Dubai Holding and the Visit Hatta site all give that figure, and Visit Hatta gives roughly the same from Dubai International Airport. It is a clear-road time, so build in some margin.
How far is Hatta from Dubai in kilometres?
No UAE authority or UAE news outlet we could find publishes a road distance, so we do not state one. The sources that cover Hatta answer with a drive time of about 90 minutes instead. Any confident kilometre figure you see is worth checking against who published it.
Which road should I take from Dubai to Hatta?
The Sharjah-Kalba road, the E102, which Dubai Holding's Visit Hatta site names as the quickest route from Dubai. Avoid the direct E44 line through Al Madam, which runs through Omani territory. Follow the signposted route for Hatta.
Do I need my passport to drive to Hatta?
Not for the Sharjah-Kalba route, which stays inside the UAE the whole way. The Oman border post beyond the town is a separate matter, and in 2018 Gulf News reported that non-GCC nationals were turned back from the direct E44 stretch through Omani territory. That report is several years old, so if you intend to go that way, check with the authorities first.
Is Hatta open all year?
The town is, but its main attractions run on a season. Hatta Resorts reopened on 28 September 2026 for its ninth season, and the Visit Hatta site puts most activities in the window from the start of October to early May. Its own pages give different opening hours in different places, so check before you travel.
Can I take one of your rental cars to Hatta?
Yes. Our cars may be driven anywhere in the seven Emirates, and Hatta is part of Dubai. What they cannot do is leave the country, so the Oman crossing past the town is out. Salik is recharged at cost plus AED 1 per crossing and fuel is same-to-same, as on any other trip.
