Salik in Dubai 2026: Gates, Rates, Recharge and the New VAT

If you drive in Dubai, you pay Salik. It is automatic, it is unavoidable on the main arteries, and since 1 June 2026, Salik Dubai also carries 5% VAT. This guide covers what a crossing actually costs in 2026, where the ten gates are, how to recharge your account, and - the part most guides skip - exactly how Salik works when the car is a rental.

What Salik is

Salik is Dubai's automatic road toll system, run by Salik Company PJSC. A tag on your windscreen is read as you pass under a gate, and the charge is deducted from a prepaid account. There are no barriers and no booths - you do not slow down, and you cannot opt out of a gate once you are committed to that stretch of road.

Every car registered in Dubai needs a tag. A tag costs AED 100 in person (AED 50 for the tag itself plus AED 50 of starting credit), or AED 120 delivered, which adds a AED 20 delivery fee. Rental cars already have one fitted - you never buy a tag for a rental.

Where the Salik gates are

There are ten Salik gates in Dubai:

• Al Barsha - Sheikh Zayed Road

• Al Safa North - Sheikh Zayed Road

• Al Safa South - Sheikh Zayed Road

• Jebel Ali - Sheikh Zayed Road

• Al Garhoud Bridge - Sheikh Rashid Road

• Al Maktoum Bridge - Umm Hurair Road

• Al Mamzar North - Al Ittihad Road

• Al Mamzar South - Al Ittihad Road

• Airport Tunnel - Beirut Street

• Business Bay Crossing - Al Khail Road

The practical takeaway: Sheikh Zayed Road carries four gates, and every Creek crossing except Al Shindagha Tunnel is tolled. If you commute between Deira or Bur Dubai and the newer districts, you will cross at least one gate each way.

What a Salik crossing costs in 2026

Dubai moved to variable pricing, so the time of day decides the price. At the time of writing the rates are:

• Peak - AED 6 plus VAT (AED 6.30): Monday to Saturday, 06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00

• Off-peak - AED 4 plus VAT (AED 4.20): Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:00 and 20:00 to 01:00

• Sunday - AED 4 plus VAT (AED 4.20) all day, outside the free window

• Free - 01:00 to 06:00 every day. During Ramadan this window shifts to 02:00 to 07:00

The 5% VAT is the new part. Salik announced that from 1 June 2026, VAT applies to toll tariffs and tag activation fees, which is why the amounts on your statement now carry decimals. Rates change, so treat these as a snapshot and check salik.ae for the current tariff.

One quirk worth knowing: at the Al Safa and Al Mamzar gate pairs, a second crossing in the same direction within an hour is not charged twice. Short there-and-back trips past those gates cost less than you would expect.

How to recharge Salik

You can top up a Salik account through any of these:

• The Salik app (iOS and Android) or salik.ae - card payment, instant

• RTA Dubai app and RTA customer happiness centres

• Bank channels - most UAE banking apps list Salik as a billed utility

• ATMs and kiosks from participating banks

• Petrol stations - ENOC, EPPCO and ADNOC outlets sell recharge vouchers

• Auto top-up - link a card and the account refills itself when the balance runs low

Auto top-up is the one worth setting up. Running a Salik account dry is not a warning, it is a fine: the first few crossings on an empty account attract a penalty per trip, and leaving it unresolved for several working days escalates it. If you own your car, switch on auto-recharge and forget about it.

How to check your Salik balance

The Salik app shows your balance and a full crossing history on the home screen. You can also check through the RTA Dubai app, on salik.ae by logging in with your account number, or by SMS from your registered mobile number. Statements list every crossing with the gate name, date and time - useful if you ever want to check a charge against where you actually drove.

Salik on a rental car: who pays, and how

This is the part that catches people out. The tag belongs to the rental company, so crossings are billed to the company first and recharged to you afterwards. How that recharge is calculated is entirely up to the rental company, and it varies wildly across Dubai - some add a flat administration fee per rental, some mark each crossing up substantially, and some bury it in a vague line on the final invoice.

Ask any rental company two questions before you sign: what do you charge per Salik crossing, and will I see an itemised list? If either answer is vague, assume the worst.

How to spend less on Salik

1. Shift your timing. Leaving at 10:15 instead of 09:45 drops each crossing from AED 6.30 to AED 4.20. Across a 40-crossing month that is roughly AED 84 saved for half an hour of patience.

2. Use Al Shindagha Tunnel. It is the one Creek crossing without a gate. If your route allows it, it is free.

3. Check the map before you commit to a lane. Sheikh Zayed Road has four gates - a parallel route on Al Wasl or Jumeirah Beach Road often avoids one entirely at a small cost in time.

4. Drive late. Anything between 01:00 and 06:00 is free at every gate.

For a longer stay, budget roughly AED 150 to 400 a month for Salik on a normal commute - more if you cross the Creek twice daily at peak. Factor that in alongside fuel and parking when you compare a rental against owning.
