Car Registration Renewal and Vehicle Inspection in Dubai (2026): Fees, Steps and Fines

Every car on a Dubai plate has to be re-registered once a year, and once it turns three it has to pass a technical inspection first. Miss the date and the meter starts running - a monthly late fee, then a AED 500 fine, four black points and a week in the impound if you are caught driving on an expired card. This guide covers the 2026 fees, the inspection, the exact renewal steps and the deadlines - and, at the end, why none of it is your problem if you rent.

We run a rental fleet in Dubai as an RTA-authorised dealer and agency, so registration renewals and vehicle tests are part of our weekly routine. What follows is the process as it actually works, not the brochure version.

The short version

• Renewal is annual. Your registration card (Mulkiya) shows the expiry date; the RTA app reminds you as it approaches.

• Cars older than three years need a technical inspection first. Newer cars skip it and can renew entirely online.

• Budget about AED 370 without a test, roughly AED 540 to 565 with one - see the fee breakdown below.

• You get a 30-day grace period after expiry. After that Dubai charges AED 35 for every late month, and driving on an expired card is a AED 500 fine, four black points and a seven-day impound.

• Everything must be clear first: traffic fines, Salik balance and a valid insurance policy covering the year ahead.

Do you need a vehicle inspection?

Only if the car is more than three years old. Under three, the RTA trusts the manufacturer and you renew straight from the app. Over three, the car must pass an RTA technical inspection every year before the registration can be renewed.

The test itself is quick - around 12 to 20 minutes for a normal car - and covers the things that make a car unsafe or non-compliant: brakes, tyres, steering and suspension, lights and indicators, windscreen condition, window tint beyond the legal limit, emissions and the chassis number matching the paperwork. The inspection certificate is valid for 30 days, so do not test in month one and plan to renew in month three - you will be testing twice.

Where to test: the RTA does not run the lanes itself. Licensed testing centres do - Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel, Mumayaz and the Al Mutakamela centres across Dubai, many inside petrol stations and some with drive-through renewal so you leave with the new card in one visit. The inspection fee is about AED 170 for a light vehicle, varying slightly by centre. Book a slot through the centre or the RTA app; walk-ins work but queue at month-end.

The usual reasons a car fails: worn tyres (check the date code too - old rubber fails even with tread), a cracked windscreen in the driver's line of sight, a single dead bulb, tint darker than the limit, and brake wear. Fix the obvious ones before you go; a re-test costs you another visit.

How to renew your car registration in Dubai: step by step

1. Clear everything outstanding. Traffic fines and Salik must be paid - the system will not let a renewal through with a balance. Check fines in the RTA or Dubai Police app; our UAE traffic fines guide explains the discount windows.

2. Renew the insurance. You need a policy that covers the full registration year ahead, which is why UAE motor policies are typically written for 13 months - the extra month covers the grace period. The insurer uploads the policy electronically to the RTA; you no longer hand over paper.

3. Pass the inspection (cars over three years) at any licensed centre. The result is transmitted to the RTA automatically.

4. Pay and renew - in the RTA Dubai app or on rta.ae, at a centre kiosk, or at the testing centre counter if you are already there. The digital Mulkiya appears in the app immediately; the physical card is couriered for a small fee or collected.

Under-three-year-old car? Steps 1, 2 and 4 only - the whole thing is about five minutes on your phone.

What it costs in 2026

For a standard light vehicle (under three tonnes), the published fees are:

• Registration renewal fee - AED 350

• Knowledge and innovation fees - AED 20 (AED 10 each, added to every RTA transaction)

• Technical inspection - about AED 170 (only if the car is over three years old)

• Card courier delivery - about AED 25 (optional; the digital card in the app is valid on its own)

So a newer car renews for around AED 370 to 395, and an older one for roughly AED 540 to 565. Insurance sits on top and is by far the bigger number - typically AED 2,500 to 4,500 a year on a compact SUV, depending on cover and claims history.

Heavier categories cost more (roughly AED 400 for 3-12 tonne vehicles and AED 800 above that; motorcycles AED 200), and every figure here is the RTA's own schedule at the time of writing - fees do change, so treat this as a snapshot and check the app before paying.

Grace period, late fees and the fine you really want to avoid

Registration can be renewed up to 30 days after expiry with no penalty. From day 31, Dubai's RTA adds a AED 35 late fee for every month the renewal is overdue (other emirates charge AED 10). That late fee is not the real cost, though.

The real cost is being stopped or caught on camera with an expired card: AED 500, four black points, and the car impounded for seven days. That applies from the day after expiry unless you are within the grace period, and the Ministry of Interior's position is that driving during the grace month is tolerated only in circumstances that genuinely prevented you from renewing - not as a default extra month. If your insurance has also lapsed, you are uninsured on top of everything else. The sensible reading: renew before the date, and treat the 30 days as a safety net rather than a plan.

One more trap: an expired registration blocks a sale. You cannot transfer ownership of a car until the registration and all fines are current, so an overdue renewal quietly stalls any plan to sell.

If you rent, none of this is yours

Here is the honest pitch. Registration, inspection, insurance renewal and the annual admin around all three are exactly the chores a rental removes.
